In the section principles of clinical research we focus on the principles of the four major types of clinical epidemiological research questions: etiologic, diagnostic, prognostic, and intervention research. The aim of etiologic research is to causally associate the occurrence of a target disease to a determinant, the aim of diagnostic research is to predict the probability of presence of target disease on the basis of clinical and non-clinical information, prognostic research aims to predict the course of disease from clinical and non-clinical information, and intervention research aims to causally explain the course of disease as influenced by treatment.
