Trust: Thyroid research
Leyden Academy on Vitality and Ageing, together with LUMC, University of Glasgow, University College Cork and Universität Bern are united in TRUST: multi-modal effects of thyroid hormone replacement for untreated older adults with subclinical hypothyroidism; a randomized placebo-controlled trial. This international research project will run five years and involves three thousand elderly people with a thyroid disorder. Half of the participants will be treated with a hormone replacement medication (Thyroxine) and the other half with a placebo. TRUST examines the best methods of treatment for people with so-called subclinical hypothyroidism and will give more insight into the mechanisms of aging.
The research proposal was written by Prof. David Stott during the sabbatical he spend at Leyden Academy, and is funded by a European (FP7) subsidy.
Leyden Academy is represented in the TRUST project by Prof. Rudi Westendorp (member of the research executive committee) and Drs. Eugenie Polman (communications) and will play a pivotal role in the scientific research and publication of the results.
